It’s an hour before The Lovers Key sit down for their first formal interview together. Christopher and Maco review their notes, and procedures. As we get closer, Maco grows visibly uneasy. He disappears into a corner to make a phone call. “…of course it’s fun…it’s just weird”….he’s not speaking as low as he thinks he is. To loosen-up the nerves, Chris suggests that we do an impromptu “practice interview”. Maco returns, sits next to Chris, and we begin…
Nice of you to join us…but too late; you’re fired. Is everything alright, though?
Maco: Yeah, this is great! I was talking to a friend.
Chris: Oh, he’s definitely fired (laughs)
Let’s see…you guys excited?
Chris: Sure, we are, it’s nice to get out of the studio and rehearsal room…to start talking about all this.
I’m sure…alright, what are you guys listening to, right now? Any favorite songs, at the moment?
Maco: Have you guys heard “Royals” by Lorde? Yeah, that, and Kendrick Lamar’s album is great…he tells his story, and I believe him…he’s the perfect combination of confident and humble…and I’m listening to Minnie Riperton too.
Chris: A bunch of Northern Soul compilations, the Goldsoul podcasts. Tried to get into the new Miles Kane album but it’s still nowhere near as enjoyable as his work in ‘The Last Shadow Puppets’.
Is there a place you guys are really looking forward to visiting, and playing to, and why?
Maco: Russia…they seem to like us, and we like them.
Chris: Yeah…Russia would be nice. I’d love to get back to play in Europe again someday. Throw in Japan while we’re at it.
What are your favorite instruments…what sounds do you like to hear on a track?
Maco: I love deep sounds, and resounding sounds as well, so, definitely bass, trombone, tenor sax, cello….and bells. I’m obsessed with voices, though. The more distinctive, the better.
Chris: Any and all in the right place and time so long as they create and support the mood or vibe.
Ok, I know it’s finished, so when’s the album coming out?
Maco: We’ll tell you as soon as we’re sure! We promise!
